    Thorizon Partners with Hyundai Engineering & Construction for Revolutionary Reactor Development

    French-Dutch start-up Thorizon is making waves in the nuclear energy sector with its groundbreaking partnership with South Korea’s Hyundai Engineering & Construction (Hyundai E&C). This collaboration aims to accelerate the development and global deployment of the Thorizon One molten salt reactor (MSR). The agreement was signed at Thorizon’s headquarters in Amsterdam by key figures from both companies, setting the stage for significant advancements in nuclear technology.

    The Strategic Memorandum of Understanding

    The memorandum of understanding (MOU) represents a strategic alliance that positions Thorizon to leverage Hyundai E&C’s extensive experience in Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC). Under this partnership, both organizations will engage in proactive data exchange and collaborative design activities for the Thorizon One reactor. This arrangement is designed not just for the immediate project, but also prepares for future reactor initiatives, seeking to fulfill the rising demand for low-carbon heat and power.

    Market Focus and Global Vision

    Thorizon and Hyundai E&C are particularly focused on Northern European markets—specifically Finland and Sweden—where a renewed interest in nuclear energy is surging to meet aggressive "100% fossil fuel-free" mandates. This strategic positioning underscores the partnership’s commitment to contributing to global decarbonization through innovative nuclear technology.

    Thorizon One: A New Era of Reactor Technology

    At the heart of this collaboration is the Thorizon One reactor, a 100 MWe (250 MWt) system designed specifically for industrial decarbonization. One of its standout features is a replaceable core cartridge, designed to be swapped out every 5 to 10 years. This innovation addresses common challenges faced by molten salt reactors, such as material corrosion and spent fuel management. The reactor aims to run at elevated temperatures—approximately 550°C to 600°C—making it particularly well-suited for providing process heat in industries like chemical manufacturing and steel production.

    The Path to Commercialization

    Thorizon has ambitious plans for the Thorizon One, with the company targeting 2030 for the start of construction and operational status by 2032. Before tackling the commercial-scale reactor, the company plans to build the Thorizon Pioneer, a smaller, non-commercial version. This initial reactor will primarily focus on validating the design of the reactor core, serving as a crucial step in the path to full-scale production.

    Site Evaluations and Partnerships in Europe

    Currently, Thorizon is examining three nuclear-designated sites across the Netherlands, France, and Belgium as potential locations for the first pilot deployment of the Thorizon One reactor. The selected sites are prioritized for their existing licenses, which could expedite the regulatory process.

    In the Netherlands, Thorizon is exploring a collaboration with the Dutch nuclear operator EPZ to potentially develop a non-nuclear molten salt demonstrator at the Borssele site. This area has been a critical hub for R&D activities, with the backing of local provinces like Zeeland and North Holland.

    In France, an engineering site has been established in Lyon, where Thorizon aims to set up a dedicated R&D center in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The focus here is on producing cartridge prototypes and carrying out testing, while collaborations with companies like Orano will facilitate fuel recycling efforts.

    In Belgium, Thorizon is working with the engineering firm Tractebel to identify suitable sites within the Benelux region, specifically targeting heavy industrial clients who require high-temperature heat.

    Support from Regulatory Authorities and Financial Backing

    To ensure smooth deployment across these regions, the nuclear safety authorities of France (ASN) and the Netherlands (ANVS) are conducting a joint preparatory review of the reactor design. This collaboration illustrates a commitment to regulatory compliance and safety as Thorizon moves forward.

    Financially, Thorizon has garnered significant backing from both national and EU sources. A notable €10 million ($11.5 million) subsidy from the French government is aimed at propelling the development of the Thorizon One reactor. Furthermore, the EU recently awarded an additional €10 million from the Just Transition Fund to the ZILT consortium, led by Thorizon, to support foundational efforts in the Zeeland province.

    The initiatives outlined above underscore Thorizon’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in the nuclear sector, ushering in a new era of energy solutions that prioritize both efficiency and environmental responsibility. This partnership with Hyundai E&C is not just a strategic move for Thorizon, but a significant step forward in the global shift towards cleaner energy sources.
