El Paso International Airport is leading the charge toward sustainability with its innovative Solar Covered Parking initiative. This forward-thinking project is an exciting step toward harnessing renewable energy in a practical, everyday setting—parking lots. Not only does it aim to reduce the airport’s carbon footprint, but it also enhances the passenger experience with shaded parking options.
To facilitate this transformative project, preparations for construction will necessitate the closure of the Premium Reserved Parking lot and the eastern section of the Short-Term lot, effective October 5, 2025. Travelers who frequent the airport will need to plan ahead and consider alternative parking options during this time. In a move to ease the inconvenience, the airport is expanding the West Lot by adding approximately 100 additional parking spaces. This expansion is strategically timed to be open for use by Thanksgiving, which is one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the Solar Covered Parking initiative is its scale. The project will introduce a staggering 2,286 solar panels atop canopy structures in the parking areas. Each solar panel boasts a capacity of 585 watts, collectively generating a robust total of 1.33 megawatts of electricity. This substantial energy production not only exemplifies the effective use of solar technology but also serves as a model for other airports and public facilities looking to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels.
Fiscal responsibility is also a priority for the El Paso International Airport, exemplified by the project’s overall cost of $3.8 million. A significant portion, $1.75 million, is being funded through a federal grant provided by the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2022. This not only makes the initiative financially feasible but also highlights the role of government support in facilitating sustainable projects that benefit the community and environment.
Project completion is anticipated by February 2026, marking a significant milestone for El Paso’s ongoing sustainability efforts. As construction commences, the airport hopes to deliver a more energy-efficient solution that not only benefits travelers with shaded parking but also contributes to a greener future.
