Hurtigruten to Navigate 4,000 Km Using Climate-Neutral Biofuels – Cruise Industry Update

Groundbreaking Voyage: Hurtigruten’s First Climate-Neutral Biofuel Sailing

On October 29, 2025, Hurtigruten is set to etch its name into the annals of maritime history by embarking on its first climate-neutral sailing powered entirely by biofuels. This momentous occasion represents not just a milestone for the company but a significant step forward in the cruise and shipping industries’ journey towards sustainability.

    The Vision of Sustainability

Hedda Felin, the CEO of Hurtigruten, emphasized the company’s commitment to reducing emissions. “We already sail on blended biofuel, but for the first time, we will carry out the entire sailing on 100 percent advanced biofuel,” she explained. This goal aligns closely with Norway’s climate ambitions, showcasing how innovative solutions can play a key role in environmental stewardship.

    The Route and Experience

Renowned for its breathtaking scenery, the sailing route spans approximately 4,000 kilometers along the stunning Norwegian coastline, from Bergen to Kirkenes and back. This itinerary not only offers travelers the chance to witness Norway’s natural beauty but also marks the first time this iconic route will be undertaken in a fully climate-neutral manner.

    The Vessel: Richard With

The ship chosen for this historic voyage is the battery-hybrid vessel, Richard With. As part of its commitment to sustainability, Hurtigruten will fill the ship’s tanks with 100 percent advanced biofuel for the trip. This approach demonstrates a significant leap towards environmentally conscious operations, with the ship also connecting to shore power wherever feasible.

    Investment in Sustainability

Since 2022, Hurtigruten has invested €100 million in technological upgrades aimed at reducing CO2 and NOx emissions across its fleet. By phasing in the use of biofuels progressively, the company is taking meaningful strides towards minimizing its environmental impact. The biofuel for this sailing, known as HVO100 (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), is derived from waste and supplied by energy company St1.

    Advanced Biofuels: A Game-Changer

Felin explained that advanced biofuels represent a viable solution for achieving significant emission reductions with existing fleets. “Our long-term vision is to be able to sail completely emission-free in normal operation,” she stated. The adoption of proven, safe technology like advanced biofuels not only addresses current emissions but also mitigates the environmental concerns linked to building new ships.

    Collaborative Initiatives Towards Emission Reduction

Hurtigruten is actively exploring additional strategies to cut emissions. One of these initiatives is the Sea Zero project, aimed at designing a ship capable of operating without emissions under normal conditions. The company is also looking towards the future, with aspirations to build new vessels that can reduce total energy consumption by 40 to 50 percent.

    Innovative Technologies for Sustainable Shipping

The aspirations don’t end with biofuels. Hurtigruten plans to utilize a range of innovative solutions, such as battery power as the main energy source, sails, air lubrication for hulls, and more efficient designs with contra-rotating propellers. These advancements reflect the company’s commitment to creating a sustainable shipping future where environmental preservation goes hand in hand with maritime travel.

    Embracing a Greener Future

As Hurtigruten prepares for its groundbreaking climate-neutral voyage, the maritime industry watches closely. The move signifies a larger trend towards sustainability, as companies around the world are increasingly held accountable for their environmental footprints. With its commitment to groundbreaking practices, Hurtigruten not only offers a unique travel experience but is also contributing to the health of our planet.

This ambitious sailing stands as an inspiring example of how innovation, investment, and dedication can coalesce to create a more sustainable future for the cruising world. The 2025 voyage will not only be a testament to Hurtigruten’s forward-thinking initiatives but also a call to action for the entire industry to embrace greener practices.
