Apple’s Commitment to 5G
Apple has taken the lead by announcing a software update scheduled for December, which will activate 5G capabilities on iPhones used in India. The tech giant first introduced 5G support with the launch of the iPhone 12 in 2020. “We are working with our carrier partners in India to bring the best 5G experience to iPhone users as soon as network validation and testing for quality and performance are completed," Apple stated.
Google’s Efforts with Its Pixel Devices
Google is following suit by promising a software update to enable 5G functionality on its Pixel devices, although it has yet to provide a specific timeline for the rollout. Devices like the Pixel 7, 7 Pro, and Pixel 6a are all set to become part of India’s 5G ecosystem soon. A Google spokesperson said, “We are actively working with the Indian carriers to enable functionality at the earliest.”
Samsung’s Wide Reach in the Indian Market
Samsung, which holds the position of the second-largest smartphone vendor in India, has also confirmed its commitment to bringing software updates that enable local airwave support across its entire portfolio of 5G devices. According to a Samsung India spokesperson, the company has pledged to roll out over-the-air (OTA) updates by mid-November 2022. “Samsung has pioneered 5G technology development since 2009," they noted, highlighting the brand’s history and capability in this domain.
Financial Investment in 5G Infrastructure
In July, India sold licenses for 5G airwaves in a record-breaking auction totaling $19 billion. Reliance Jio emerged as the largest buyer, committing to substantial investments of around $25 billion to broaden its 5G services. The potential impact of 5G technology is significant, with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasizing, “5G is a knock on the doors of a new era in the country. It is the beginning of an infinite sky of opportunities.”
Market Share Dynamics
Although Apple and Google are making strides in enabling 5G in India, their market share remains relatively small. Apple claims only about 4% of the local smartphone market, while Google’s figures are less defined. According to Counterpoint Research, as of July, the total install base of 5G-ready smartphones in India had surpassed 50 million units.
Compatibility with Existing Devices
Many smartphones from Chinese manufacturers like Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Realme, and OnePlus already support Airtel’s 5G services. Airtel has launched its services in eight cities, while Reliance Jio has initiated a more limited rollout in four cities through an invite-only program. Both companies aim to expand their 5G infrastructure across the country over the next few years.
Future Expansion Plans
Airtel’s chairman, Sunil Bharti Mittal, has set ambitious targets, aiming to cover all parts of its launch cities by March 2023, with plans to extend 5G services nationwide by the end of 2023. Reliance Jio has similar aspirations, planning a more comprehensive rollout across India by 2023.
