Sweden’s nuclear technology company Studsvik has announced the acquisition of Kärnfull Next (KNXT), marking a significant shift in Studsvik’s role from a technical services provider to a key developer of small modular reactor (SMR) projects in the Nordic region.
With an initial enterprise value of approximately €6.5 million ($7.5 million), the acquisition will involve €3 million in cash and €3.5 million in newly issued Studsvik shares. There are also potential additional payments of up to €16 million, which could include up to €2 million in shares by 2029 and performance-based earn-outs linked to project milestones. Completion of the transaction is anticipated in the second quarter of 2026, contingent on regulatory approvals.
Founders of Kärnfull Next, Christian Sjölander and John Ahlberg, will be integrated into Studsvik’s executive management team, leading this new project development arm. This strategic acquisition is expected to leverage KNXT’s existing project portfolio and site development expertise, which includes:
- Studsvik Site (Nyköping): Both companies are actively exploring the possibilities of constructing SMRs right on Studsvik’s industrial site, utilizing existing infrastructure for seamless project development.
- Valdemarsvik Project: KNXT has already secured land rights for a potential SMR power plant in Valdemarsvik, Östergötland, providing a solid foundation for future growth.
- Technology Partnerships: While the platform remains technology-agnostic, KNXT has established memoranda of understanding with GE Hitachi for the BWRX-300 and collaborates closely with Fortum to enhance innovation.
The timing of this deal coincides perfectly with the Swedish government’s new financing mechanisms worth SEK 220 billion (€20.6 billion), aimed at stimulating advanced reactor projects and enhancing energy security in the region.
This acquisition signals a strategic pivot as industries and governments increasingly recognize the role of nuclear power in achieving energy security and meeting net-zero goals. With their new project development capability, Studsvik enhances its ability to support nuclear projects from initial conception through to operation and eventual decommissioning.
Daniel S. Aegerter, Founder & CEO of Armada Investment and Studsvik’s largest shareholder, articulated the vision behind this acquisition, stating, “Together, Studsvik and Kärnfull Next will build a truly integrated nuclear services platform – and establish Studsvik as the home for entrepreneurial ambition in nuclear.” The sentiments echoed by KNXT founders Christian Sjölander and John Ahlberg reinforce this vision, as they highlight their commitment to propelling Studsvik into a leading nuclear services champion.
This acquisition lays a solid groundwork for Studsvik’s forthcoming ventures in new nuclear development. The company is poised to announce additional partnerships that will showcase how its expanded capabilities will be leveraged in practical, real-world applications. As the global landscape increasingly pivots towards sustainable energy solutions, Studsvik’s strategic moves position it at the forefront of a transformative era in nuclear energy development.
