Vallourec and Geostock: Pioneering the Future of Energy Storage
In a significant development for the energy sector, Vallourec and Geostock have joined forces by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aiming to enhance their collaboration in the infrastructure necessary for a successful energy transition. This partnership is particularly focused on two critical areas: hydrogen storage and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS).
Complementary Expertise
The collaboration between Vallourec and Geostock leverages their respective strengths to create a formidable alliance in the energy landscape. Vallourec is renowned for its premium seamless tubular solutions and brings to the table its innovative Delphy hydrogen storage system. This system can safely store up to 100 tons of hydrogen, offering a reliable solution for energy storage needs.
On the other hand, Geostock specializes in underground energy storage and is well-equipped to provide mined lined rock cavern solutions. These solutions are designed for larger capacities, exceeding 500 tons, allowing for varied applications in hydrogen storage.
Together, these two companies aim to provide a comprehensive range of storage solutions that will cover the entire spectrum of needs across the green hydrogen value chain.
Expanding Industrial Expertise
The partnership does not merely focus on technology but also significantly enhances industrial expertise. Geostock’s extensive knowledge in subsurface and civil engineering will support the deployment of Vallourec’s systems, helping to strengthen project execution from initial design to final installation. This collaboration is set to streamline processes and improve efficiency, ensuring that projects are executed smoothly and effectively.
Joint Innovations in R&D
Going beyond just storage solutions, the MoU includes collaborative efforts in research and development, particularly concerning well architecture and tubular technologies related to hydrogen and CCUS applications. The companies plan to share their research results and technical expertise in order to develop advanced wells capable of handling the rigorous conditions associated with subsurface hydrogen storage and CO₂ injection.
Vallourec’s extensively tested tubular solutions are expected to play a crucial role in guaranteeing the safety and performance of these future underground storage projects. This emphasis on research and innovation highlights the companies’ commitment to addressing the challenges posed by energy transition.
Commitment to Sustainable Solutions
The MoU aligns seamlessly with Vallourec’s broader strategy of partnering with leading experts in New Energies. This strategy is aimed at tackling the industrial, environmental, and economic challenges of the energy transition. By collaborating with Geostock, Vallourec is not only enhancing its capabilities but also reinforcing its commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
Philippe Guillemot, Group Chairman and CEO of Vallourec, expressed the significance of this partnership, stating, “This partnership marks an important step in strengthening our collaboration with a leading expert in underground storage. By joining forces with Geostock, we are accelerating the development of the infrastructure essential to build a performing low-carbon energy value chain in hydrogen storage and CCUS.”
Innovative Underground Storage Solutions
Pascal Baylocq, CEO of Geostock, echoed the sentiment of collaboration, noting that this partnership allows Geostock to expand its range of solutions for hydrogen storage in hard rock environments. He emphasized, “The agreement between our companies also aligns with Geostock’s goal of staying at the forefront of knowledge.”
As part of this synergy, Geostock plans to utilize Vallourec’s expertise in metallic materials across various underground storage techniques, which includes salt caverns, hard rocks, and porous media. This combination of expertise positions both companies to innovate and provide superior energy storage solutions that can meet future demands.
By integrating their resources and knowledge, Vallourec and Geostock are setting a strong foundation for transforming the energy storage sector, particularly in the domains of hydrogen and CCUS technologies. Their collaboration represents a forward-thinking approach that could reshape how industries approach energy storage, making it more sustainable and efficient for the future.
