Piyush Goyal Engages with Sembcorp CEO to Discuss Partnership Opportunities in Renewable Energy and Green Hydrogen

The landscape of renewable energy and sustainable growth is rapidly evolving, and recent discussions between Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, and Kim Yin Wong, Group President and CEO of Sembcorp, illustrate this transformation. Meeting in Singapore on a Saturday, Goyal and Wong explored potential collaborations aimed at fostering India’s progress in renewable energy, highlighting a shared commitment to advancing clean energy technologies.

During their conversation, Goyal underscored India’s notable achievements in renewable energy, detailing the nation’s ambitious targets for the future. He discussed key areas of collaboration, including clean energy, green hydrogen initiatives, industrial parks, and skill development. This dialogue reflects India’s ongoing dedication to not just domestic growth but also to forging global partnerships as it embarks on an energy transition. Goyal later expressed on X, “Held a meeting with Mr. Kim Yin Wong… We discussed India’s remarkable achievements in renewable energy and its ambitious goals.”

Adding further depth to his visit, Goyal participated in the ‘India-Singapore@60: Partnership for Growth and Innovation’ Business Session, alongside Gan Siow Huang, Singapore’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Trade & Industry. The session emphasized the critical need for enhanced collaboration and business-to-business (B2B) opportunities between India and Singapore. By focusing on strengthening trade and investment ties, the two nations are poised to create a more balanced and inclusive economic partnership.

In the course of his three-day official visit to Singapore, Goyal met with Singapore’s Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong, to discuss potential pathways for strengthening trade relations and fostering cooperation between the two countries. A government statement released on Friday highlighted how Goyal’s visit illustrated India’s robust growth trajectory and commitment to investment-driven reforms. The discussions aimed at unveiling a broad spectrum of opportunities for global partners in sectors such as manufacturing, infrastructure, financial services, and the green economy.

In addition to his meeting with Wong, Goyal engaged in bilateral discussions with Gan Kim Yong, Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry. Their conversations revolved around deepening industrial and trade cooperation—a crucial aspect for both countries as they navigate a rapidly changing global economic landscape. This reflects a mutual recognition of the potential benefits of closer economic ties.

Moreover, Goyal’s interactions extended to meeting with Vivian Balakrishnan, Singapore’s Minister for Foreign Affairs. This engagement served to reaffirm strategic trust and alignment on regional and global economic priorities, further solidifying the foundation for collaboration between India and Singapore.

During this visit, Goyal also conversed with prominent figures in the investment realm, including Bryan Yeo, Group CIO of GIC, and Dilhan Pillay, CEO of Temasek. The discussions focused on expanding India-focused portfolios across various sectors such as infrastructure, hospitality, renewable energy, financial services, and urban development. A highlight was the Business Roundtable on Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in India’s manufacturing sector, which gathered prominent decision-makers from organizations like AmCham and EuroCham, signaling the heavy interest in India’s growing market potential.

Beyond high-level political interactions, Goyal engaged in strategic business discussions with various Singaporean corporates and institutional investors. A notable visit to SIA Engineering Company (SIAEC) involved discussions centered on India’s burgeoning Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO) sector, particularly regarding the essential need to fast-track the India-Singapore Skilling Centre for MRO professionals in collaboration with Indian universities. This initiative is crucial for building a skilled workforce capable of supporting India’s expanding aviation and engineering sectors.
