Elevating Energy Economics at NMSU: The Journey of Jamal Mamkhezri

    A Commitment to Energy Economics

Since joining New Mexico State University (NMSU) as a faculty member of the College of Business in 2019, Jamal Mamkhezri has made remarkable strides in the field of energy economics. An associate professor in the Department of Economics, Applied Statistics, and International Business, Mamkhezri’s primary mission is to elevate the university’s profile in this crucial area of study. His passion lies in expanding interest and knowledge within energy economics, an area he has dedicated much of his professional career to researching.

    A Focused Research Agenda

“I focus on environmental and natural resource economics, particularly concerning fossil fuels and renewable energy,” explains Mamkhezri. His research interests are timely and highly relevant as the world grapples with climate change and sustainability challenges. Through his work, he seeks to uncover insights that can influence policy and consumer behavior, ultimately facilitating a transition toward more sustainable energy sources.

    Educational Foundations

Before making his mark at NMSU, Mamkhezri earned a Ph.D. in economics from the University of New Mexico in 2019. His doctoral dissertation was particularly noteworthy; it explored the market and non-market valuations associated with renewable energy, especially in the context of the electricity sector. This academic foundation laid the groundwork for his innovative research at NMSU.

    Holding the Chevron Endowed Professorship

In March 2024, Mamkhezri’s expertise and commitment were recognized when he was appointed to the College of Business’s Chevron Endowed Professorship, established in 2012 in memory of Sen. Pete Domenici. This prestigious position supports faculty engaged in robust research, teaching, and advising within the field of energy economics. It grants him the resources necessary to push the boundaries of his research.

“My current work involves integrating studies of economic and environmental trade-offs. I utilize complex systems modeling to evaluate consumer preferences for adopting renewable energy,” Mamkhezri elaborates. This approach not only exemplifies his innovative thinking but also emphasizes the urgent need for a holistic understanding of energy economics.

Expanding Research on a Global Scale

Mamkhezri is currently catalysts for impactful research, leveraging funds from the endowed professorship and external grants exceeding $2 million. This financial backing allows him to investigate energy-related issues on a global scale. Notably, in June 2024, he traveled to Turkey to present his findings at the International Association of Energy Economics. During this conference, he conducted an online survey of 1,500 U.S. residents to assess attitudes towards battery electric vehicles (EVs) and the energy sources that power them.

    Groundbreaking Findings

In January 2025, Mamkhezri’s study was published in the esteemed journal, Energy Economics. The findings highlighted a positive “willingness to pay” among U.S. taxpayers for increased battery electric vehicle adoption in the transportation system. The study also revealed strong support for job creation linked to accelerated vehicle decarbonization, noting a preference for tax credits as incentives over free charging and parking initiatives. These insights not only drive academic discourse but also inform policymakers looking to enhance renewable energy adoption.

    Building an Educational Framework

During his initial year at NMSU, Mamkhezri played a crucial role in developing an energy economics concentration within the undergraduate economics program. This 12-credit concentration aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills required for future careers in energy administration, positioning them for leadership roles in the industry. He believes that New Mexico has tremendous potential to become a leader in energy economics.

“We have all the right resources in New Mexico,” Mamkhezri asserts. “We are the second-largest oil producer in the United States, and our state enjoys over 300 days of sunshine each year. The wind flows through the eastern part of the state, providing the capacity for significant energy generation.” His insights reflect not only an academic understanding but also a deep appreciation for the state’s unique position in the energy landscape.

    Recognition and Impact

Mamkhezri’s contributions to both teaching and research have not gone unnoticed. In 2023, he was awarded the Undergraduate Teaching Award from the College of Business for his outstanding educational efforts. The following year, he garnered further recognition for his excellence in research.

His work in diversifying the field has also received accolades. The National Science Foundation highlighted his SEED Award project as exemplary in supporting underrepresented students in energy economics. In December 2024, he was elected as the vice president for Academic Affairs on the Executive Council of the United States Association for Energy Economics—a testament to his standing in the academic community. Moreover, during the spring 2025 convocation, he received the Early Career Award from the University Research Council, recognizing his exceptional research and creative contributions.

    A Catalyst for Change

Through his multifaceted roles at NMSU, Jamal Mamkhezri stands as a pivotal figure in the realm of energy economics. His research, teaching, and advocacy not only enhance the university’s reputation but also contribute meaningfully to the broader discourse on renewable energy and environmental sustainability. The future of energy economics at NMSU is poised for growth, guided by Mamkhezri’s vision and commitment to excellence.
