The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) recently applauded the Nigerian government’s initiative toward achieving the ambitious Mission 300 target. This initiative aims to provide electricity to 300 million Africans by 2030, and Nigeria is playing a pivotal role in this vision. During a visit to the Federal Ministry of Power on October 6, 2025, Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, detailed the nation’s progress, highlighting transformative policies and renewable energy projects, particularly for the agricultural sector.
Minister Adelabu’s Vision for Nigeria’s Energy Future
Minister Adebayo Adelabu has been at the forefront of driving significant changes since taking office. He emphasized the role of solar-powered irrigation systems in revolutionizing the agricultural landscape for farmers across Nigeria. This focus not only promises to enhance productivity but also ensures a more sustainable method of farming, which is crucial for rural households.
“In the area of agriculture, we want to focus on irrigation for our rural farmers,” Adelabu stated. The deployment of thousands of solar-powered pumps is a step toward bolstering agricultural productivity. “We will also follow up with solar-powered storage facilities to address storage challenges as excess produce often goes to waste.”
GEAPP’s Support and Technical Assistance
Labna Bhyani, GEAPP’s African Director, expressed the organization’s admiration for Nigeria’s strides in policy reform and energy access initiatives. She noted, “We are truly impressed with the progress we’ve observed in Nigeria, especially in the grid and off-grid programs. Our organization, while not lending like major banks, aims to provide technical assistance to bolster Nigeria’s Mission 300 initiatives.”
Bhyani’s remarks underline the importance of collaboration between governments and non-profit organizations in achieving sustainable energy access. The technical support that GEAPP pledges to offer could significantly aid in monitoring and tracking progress, an essential aspect of the Mission 300 framework.

He shared how the Mission 300 initiative would empower not just agriculture but also small-scale businesses in rural communities. While Nigeria has made remarkable progress, Minister Adelabu acknowledged the existing gaps that still need to be addressed. He invited foreign partners to provide the necessary technical support to monitor and track various aspects of the implementation process. “We have made significant strides, but there is much work still to be done,” he said, stressing the need for ongoing collaboration.
The current endeavors also include enhancing grid extension through various programs, such as the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), which aims to generate an additional 700 megawatts. The Minister spoke about upcoming phases in the Siemens project that will add another 7,000 megawatts to the national grid, showcasing the government’s commitment to stabilize power supply and support economic growth.
Addressing Financial and Operational Challenges
One of the critical challenges mentioned by Adelabu is the need for a cost-reflective tariff system, which is vital for ensuring the sustainability of energy services. He highlighted ongoing initiatives to provide consumers with accurate billing through an expanded metering initiative, moving away from the reliance on estimated billing practices.
“Our metering initiative is crucial to ensure consumers receive fair billing for their energy consumption, as we work towards achieving Mission 300 by 2030,” he stated, illustrating the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability within the energy sector.
