The New Pipeline Will Be 1.6 km Shorter and Ensure a Stable Water Supply to Rolling Shop No. 2
The Dnipro Metallurgical Plant (DMP) is embarking on an innovative and transformative project to enhance its water supply and energy efficiency. With the aim of supporting sustainable operations, the company plans to construct a new water pipeline that will transport technical water from coastal pumping station No. 1 directly to the treatment facilities of rolling mill No. 2. This initiative, highlighted in the corporate newspaper DCH Steel, signals a significant step towards improved resource management within the facility.
Currently, the existing system relies on an underground pipeline that runs from shore pumping station No. 2. This route, which includes portions external to the plant, complicates essential maintenance and monitoring processes. As a result, the facility has been experiencing not just operational inefficiencies but also water losses, leading to increased energy consumption. The new pipeline aims to streamline this process significantly.
What’s striking about the new pipeline is its projected reduction in length by 1.6 kilometers. This shorter route will follow a more efficient path directly from shore pumping station No. 1. By opting for an above-ground installation, DMP is ensuring that inspections, repairs, and real-time monitoring can be conducted more readily. This approach not only minimizes the chances of accidents but also secures a stable water supply to the rolling mill, a critical component of the DMP’s production line.
The environmental implications of this pipeline project are equally compelling. DMP anticipates a substantial decrease in electricity consumption due to the enhancements to the pumping systems. By reducing technical water losses and improving overall resource efficiency, the plant is aligning itself with modern sustainability practices. This proactive approach demonstrates a commitment to minimizing environmental impact while maintaining operational excellence.
Moreover, the ongoing modernization of water supply systems is part of a broader initiative aimed at optimizing energy use and enhancing production safety. This transformation reflects DMP’s strategic goal to reduce operational costs while bolstering infrastructure resilience against external challenges. Such efforts are vital in today’s context, where environmental considerations are paramount.
In a related vein, DMP recently presented a comprehensive environmental modernization strategy, in line with the European green agenda. This ambitious plan underscores the company’s commitment to sustainable practices, including the construction of an electric steel melting complex (ESMC) and a transition to renewable energy sources. Notably, the strategy marks a pivotal shift with the complete decommissioning of coke production scheduled to commence on May 13.
