OMV’s Green Hydrogen Initiative in Lower Austria
Funding Agreement Secures Financial Backing
In a significant move towards sustainable energy production, OMV has successfully secured a funding agreement with Austria Wirtschaftsservice GmbH (aws). This partnership will provide production funding guarantees of up to €123 million for OMV’s planned green hydrogen plant located in Bruck an der Leitha, Lower Austria. The project’s ambition is to contribute substantially to Austria’s hydrogen strategy while aligning with OMV’s long-term business objectives.
Endorsement from the European Hydrogen Bank
Before this funding agreement, the initiative already gained traction through a positive assessment from the European Hydrogen Bank. Their recommendation for financial support highlights the project’s viability and importance, showcasing a robust endorsement from key European institutions. This backing illustrates a growing confidence in large-scale green hydrogen projects, which are crucial for transitioning towards greener energy solutions.
Austria’s Role in Clean Energy Advancement
The development of the green hydrogen plant underscores Austria’s crucial role in the clean energy landscape. OMV’s commitment to integrating innovative technologies with a strong emphasis on environmental responsibility aligns with national goals to enhance renewable energy sources. The facility not only aims to produce green hydrogen but also reaffirms Austria’s positioning as a frontrunner in the transition to sustainable energy.
Significant Investment and Capacity
OMV plans to invest several hundred million euros into the Bruck an der Leitha facility, which is designed to have a capacity of 140 MW. Set to begin operations by the end of 2027, this plant is anticipated to rank among the five largest green hydrogen facilities in Europe. Once operational, it is projected to produce approximately 23,000 tonnes of green hydrogen each year.
Environmental Impact and Carbon Emission Reduction
One of the most compelling aspects of this hydrogen plant is its potential environmental impact. OMV estimates that the facility could help reduce carbon emissions by as much as 150,000 tonnes annually. By utilizing electricity generated from renewable sources—wind, solar, and hydropower—this initiative not only supports clean energy production but also contributes significantly to Austria’s emissions reduction targets.
Direct Supply to OMV’s Schwechat Refinery
In an important operational strategy, the hydrogen produced at the Bruck an der Leitha plant will be transported via a 22-kilometre pipeline directly to OMV’s Schwechat refinery. This local production and direct supply are crucial in reducing emissions from the company’s fuel and chemical operations. This streamlined approach enhances efficiency and helps ensure that the hydrogen is integrated into their existing processes.
Strategic Partnership with Masdar
In November 2025, OMV forged a strategic alliance with Masdar, a leading global clean energy company, to establish a joint venture for the green hydrogen project. This partnership is set to take on responsibilities for financing, building, and operating the facility. The finalization of this joint venture is expected in early 2026, pending the completion of legal documents and necessary approvals. The collaboration with Masdar reflects OMV’s commitment to global partnerships in advancing sustainable energy projects.
Future Prospects
OMV’s ambitious green hydrogen plant in Bruck an der Leitha represents a significant step forward in the landscape of sustainable energy production in Europe. By harnessing renewable energy sources and fostering international collaborations, OMV is not only positioning itself as a leader in the green hydrogen sector but also contributing meaningfully to the broader goal of environmental sustainability.
